HAPPENINGS AROUND INDIAN RIVER

By Trustee Janet Vance

FIREWORKS: Sunday, July 2nd. (Rain date: July 5th)  They will be shot off from the end of Veteran's Pier. THE BIGGEST SHOW EVER!  We will have music throughout the show!

FOURTH OF JULY PARADE: Tuesday, July 4th!  Starts at 11am. Always a good time!

FARMER'S MARKET: Every Thursday afternoon from 2- 6:00. Located behind Northland Brewery - Downtown Indian River.

COMMUNITY TRASH DAY: Saturday, September 9th - At the Tuscarora Township Airport. We will post more information on our website as it becomes available.

RE-PAVING OF CLUB ROAD: This much needed infrastructure project is scheduled to be completed by early Fall. This will enhance access to Marina Park, Tuscarora Township's Boat Launch, several township businesses and homes, as well as make it safer for emergency vehicles and school buses.

BOAT LAUNCH SIGNAGE: New directional signage for our Boat Launch has been ordered and will be placed at the corner of Club Road and M-68.

VA CLINIC: The clinic is located just east of I-75, off of M-68. This is a fantastic opportunity for our local veterans, as well as the community as a whole. It is scheduled to be finished by August, opening later in the year.

DOLLAR GENERAL STORE: Located North of Indian River on S. Straits Hwy. Scheduled to be open by mid to end of August!

SECURITY IMPROVEMENTSThe Board is currently coordinating with the Library to enhance security in and around the Township Hall. Also, the Township Offices are open from 9-5, Monday thru Friday for your convenience.

STEPS TO INDIAN RIVERThe new steps to the river (next to the Straits Hwy. Bridge) are expected to be finished by the first week in July. This has been a DDA project, financed with ARPA funds.

OAK HILL CEMETERYThe Township has made the cemetery a priority, and it is looking a lot better. We have reduced some of the tree "canopy", but we have more to do. We have also been awarded a Blight Elimination Grant from the State of Michigan that will allow us to refurbish the cemetery building without using Township Funds. In addition, we have had gravel laid on the private road to allow better access into the cemetery.

PICKLE BALL/TENNIS COURTS: The re-surfacing of the Pickle Ball/Tennis Courts will be finished by end of June, first of July. The net is also being repaired.

TOON TIME FAMILY FRIENDLY POKER RUN: The event will be June 24 - Sponsored by the India Chamber of Commerce. Check their website for more information.

MARTHA STREET PARKING LOT: The Township is looking to build a  community parking lot off of Martha Street, next to the Trail. This will accommodate approximately 20-22 vehicles.

SEWERS: Phase 1 and 2 will be going out for bids in August. The Engineer is behind schedule, but the engineer assured us that they can still do a considerable amount of work during the fall and winter months. We are still concerned about the costs, due to inflation, but we are working with the different entities to make sure we get the best cost estimates we can.

BRINING : The brining has been completed for round one, and we are going to have it done one more time this year.  Next year, we will try to have the first application of brining completed sometime in May, weather permitting.

BUILDING AND BALLOT BOX SECURITY: We are currently getting estimates to make the Township Hall, Library, and the Ballot Drop Box area of the parking lot a more secure and safer area.

BUDGET 2023/2024: The budget that was proposed in May was estimated to be about 50% over revenue. We have been working with our Department Heads to tighten up the expenditures, and we are now looking at a budget that is BALANCED!

APPLE BLOSSOM: We have requested a speed study from the County Road Commission for this road, due to high volume of complaints. We are also looking into the history of the egress near Indian River Marina.

GRAVEL, GRAVEL, EVERYWHERE: We are using some available funds to make improve different township properties that will make them more accessible. Some of the properties include:

            Marina Park                                        Hideaway Park

Cooperation Park                               Oak Hill Cemetery access road

And Various gravel and dirt roads that are in serious disrepair
